When the sun comes out not only should you change your wardrobe but your makeup too. Come the summer, brighter, bolder and more vibrant shades of makeup hit the beauty counters with many tempting limited edition goodies.
Before you go shopping, remember It is not just about choosing summer colours but about picking makeup which will last, be comfortable and protect your skin in the heat, such as lighter foundations with SPFs. And when sunbathing by the sea or pool this summer don’t forget to pack those waterproofs.
In the summer months most women prefer to use a lighter coverage foundation than in the winter. Colour adapting foundations are good if you will be tanning such as Max Factor Colour Adapt Foundation. It is essential to use a foundation with an SPF when exposed to the sun to help prevent sun damage. Further precautions can be taken by putting a suncream underneath your foundation.
Women prone to oily skin are more likely to experience it in the summer months and a skin balancing or matifying light foundation is the best option for such skin types. For example, Estee Lauder’s Double Wear foundation comes in a lighter version called Double Wear Light which is ideal for the summer. If a powder is required, try a light translucent powder and apply it with a powder brush for a lighter coverage. Translucent powders match a range of skin colours so are ideal for tanning skin.
Mineral makeup (also known as skin loving makeup), such as Maybelline’s Pure Liquid Mineral Foundation, offer health benefits to the skin. Another option is to go for a tinted moisturiser; these are created with the sun in mind and not only offer a light coverage foundation with an SPF but work well on oily or perspiring skin. Coverage can often be built up with tinted moisturisers too. We recommend Laura Mercier tinted moisturiser for a lovely sunkissed look.
Beach babes will not want their mascaras smudging when swimming in the sea but with so many waterproof mascaras on the market it is hard to know which to buy. Some just aren’t waterproof enough for swimming, and are really what beauty advisers call smudge-proof, while others are so waterproof that they are impossible to take off! We recommend Lancome Hypnose Waterproof mascara and No7 Extreme Length Waterproof mascara — not only are they waterproof but have the benefits of their non-waterproof counterparts and are easy to remove. Many waterproof mascaras require an oil-based eye makeup remover; always read the label before buying an eye makeup remover to check it removes waterproof mascara.
If you desire more than just mascara when swimming and sunbathing there are a number of waterproof eyeliners on the market. The JMA team have found it challenging to find a waterproof eyeliner which does not feel harsh on the skin and which comes in a range of colours.
After trying a number of the top brand’s waterproof eyeliners, Lancome’s Crayon Khol Waterproof eyeliner ticked all the boxes for us. Not only is it very waterproof but it’s very soft and easy to apply, smudge proof, gentle on the skin and available in many superb colours – black, brown, navy, turquoise, green and purple.
If you are prone to dehydrated and cracked lips you will want to protect them from the sun. There are numerous SPF lip balms on the market and these can be re-applied throughout the day. Some give a shine or colour tint to the lips and work as a makeup in themselves, including Elizabeth Arden Eight Hour Lip Protectant Cream SPF 15 which comes in different tints including Blush, Berry, Plum and Honey, as well as Bobbi Brown’s Treatment Lipshine SPF 15 which comes in thirteen beautiful shades. If you want to wear a lipstick or lip gloss you can still use a clear SPF lip balm as a base to protect and moisturise your lips. Many lipsticks come with a built in SPF to care for your lips. Alternatively, look out for “moisturising” lipsticks and lip glosses which have added conditioners and won’t dry the lips.
