L’Oreal’s new Lash Architect 4D Mascara is a False Lash Effect mascara which has 4 dimensions to create 1D volumised, 2D lengthened, 3D textured and 4D curved lashes.
L’Oreal say: “The architect brush is specially engineered to create the 4D false lash effect. Sleek and angled, it coats each and every lash with fibres. Bristles are spaced regularly so the formula goes on evenly for intense lashes with no clumps. With each stroke of the brush, women can personalise their eye make-up, turning the intensity up or down exactly as they choose.”
The formula’s exclusive adhesive resin helps attach sculpting fibres to lashes and build volume, and a sheathing ingredient also texturizes the lashes. Special deep black Nylon fibres (the same material as false eyelashes) attach to the lashes to create length, whilst two botanical waxes (carnauba wax and rice bran wax) help maintain the upward, outward curve of the lashes.
The wand has a medium size brush with bristles that are spaced evenly but quite close together. The brush gets narrower towards its tip and is slanted. The slant helps to lift lashes and ensures that product is distributed right to the roots.
I found Lash Architect 4D Mascara very easy to apply and it coated all my lashes evenly. The narrower end of the brush is good for getting to shorter lashes and inner lashes. I was really impressed with the wand and the effect it gave.
The mascara’s formula feels quite gentle on the lashes and leaves them soft (due to the waxes) which makes it easier to apply multiple coats and create lift; but the mascara gives a texturised (as marketed) rather than smooth finish to each lash to imitate false lashes. The carbon black colour is also really intense. You can see the mascara fibres as you apply it and some people may mistake these for clumps but I could see that they were significantly texturising and building up the length and volume of my lashes. Those with sensitive eyes may find the fibres irritating.
Overall, my lashes looked significantly lengthened, well-separated, lifted – which gives a wide-eyed effect – and thickened. As L’Oreal say, and I totally agree, that with repeated coats you can turn up the intensity of your look so this mascara is perfect for day or night.

Overall score: 8/10
Of its 4D’s (volumised, lengthened, textured and curved lashes) I was really pleased with the significant length, curve and texture that this mascara gave my lashes but as for the volume, they weren’t quite thick enough for my liking (I am a volume-junkie though!) so I would use a primer underneath. But overall, I think that this is really good false lash effect mascara.
