A Flush Of Colour: Top 5 Blushers

Adding colour to our cheeks can make such a difference in the way we appear. Even for those who opt for a paler complexion, adding a hint of blush can radiant the skin giving it a healthy, pinched cheek glow.

Top Blushers

Smashbox In Bloom Cheek Duo

In Bloom Cheek Duo (main image) is part of Smashbox’s Spring 2011 collection and comes in succulent peony/blush shades. By blending the two together a pearly, natural pink is created or if you are someone who likes to have a choice in shades, you can stick to using one alone. Perfect for olive skin tones and great for holidays as the two colours work well pre and post tan! Available from Debenhams.

Illamasqua Cream Blusher

Cream blushers can add soft or bold colour to cheeks and work particularly well on drier skin types. Illamasqua Cream Blushers (available from Debenhams) are delicous and we particularly like Sob for creating a flush of pink on the cheeks – the perfect ballerina shade. Maybelline Dream Touch Blush

Compared to powder blushers, this has a thicker texture but the air-whipped, smooth cream applies evenly to the skin, giving cheeks a subtle, satin finish. Compatible also, it is ideal for
on-the-go application with a small amount going a long way. Maybelline Dream Touch Blush is available from Boots.

Natural Collection Blushed Cheeks

This blusher comes with the lowest price tag in this selection, but certainly should not be seen as inferior. Set out to do the job properly, Blushed Cheeks applies softy, giving cheeks a natural, matte tint. Its strong hold lasts around the clock and comes in a variety of great shades. Priced at £1.99 (available from Boots) there is no room for complaint with this product.

Benefit Posietint

In the form of a cheek ‘stain’, this blush uniquely comes in a bottle. Looks very bright but once applied Posietint dries quickly on the skin, adding a healthy flush. Creating more of a pretty look, this product may be preferred if you like to really embrace colour on your cheeks! Also workable as a lip tint, you can get the best of both worlds with Posietint (available from Boots). Read our review of Benefit Posietint.

Tips for applying blusher

Blush isn’t a particularly hard thing to master, but cream and powder are two very different things. Here are some top tips for perfectly blushed cheeks:

Powder Blushers

  • Study your face before you apply as it is important you know the whereabout of your contour lines and where the blusher should sit.
  • Specifically use a brush created for blush as this will be the correct size and thickness to spread the powder evenly.
  • Dab the brush in the blusher and gently blow on the brushes as applying it sparingly produces a pure look.
  • Make sure you use natural light as your guide to guarantee a subtle glow.
  • Smile for the mirror! This helps you apply the blush onto the apple of your cheek.

Cream Blushers

  • For the best effect, use your fingertips.
  • Start with a small amount and rub on your cheekbones gently, moving up vertically (again remember to smile).
  • Make sure it is completely absorbed into the skin and looks even.
  • If you want a brighter look, feel free to add a little bit more. There is nothing wrong with extra peachy cheeks!
