This may seem like a stupid question but what is the best way to apply nail varnish evenly? I have quite uneven nails and however I brush it on it always looks lumpy on me.
There must be a correct way to do it!

It sounds like your nail varnish might be gloopy. Nail varnishes only stay at their best for about 6 months then they get lumpy. You can keep them in the fridge to help them stay at their best for longer. Also warm up the bottle and shake it before use. Which brands do you use? I find No 7 and Loreal have the best consistencies

If you have uneven ridges in your nails you must file them before applying your nail colour. Creating an even surface will help your colour look better.
Ensure your nails are filed, clean and dry with no traces of previous colour before applying the nail polish in three coats working from one side to another, say left, centre, right and from the cuticle to the tip. Apply a second coat to even out the appearance. Don't worry if you have excess colour around your nails - this can be removed with a cotton bud dipped in nail polish remover :) :)
